The Patrulla Águila (Eagle) is the aerobatic display team of the Spanish Air Force and represents Spain and its air force at national and international events. The team consists of seven CASA C.101 Aviojet training jets flown by flight instructors of the 793 escuadrón de la Academia General del Aire (AGA). The formation display uses red and yellow smoke, the Spanish national colors.
The Patrulla Àguila was formed in 1985 by the AGA to validate the flying qualities of the then new C.101 Aviojet in formation aerobatics. Using five aircraft the formation first displayed on June 4, 1985, at San Javier air base. The team's successes restored the interest in a national display team, following up the Patrulla Ascua F-86 fourship team of 1956-1965. The formation was soon expanded to six aircraft and white smoke generators were added.
From 1988 onwards the team consists of seven Aviojets. In 1991 the Patrulla Àguila aircraft were repainted in the current colour scheme, the design inspired by the markings of the Patrulla Ascua. On Columbus Day of October 12, 1992, the first public display using the red and yellow smoke was flown at Sevilla.
