Italy takes up NATO air patrols over Iceland
Four Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets have arrived at Iceland’s Keflavik Air Base, and from today (4 September 2018) they will help ensure the safety of Iceland’s airspace. Over the next few weeks, the Italian pilots will provide intercept capabilities and train together with the Icelandic Coast Guard and the NATO Control and Reporting Centre. The Italian jets will complement the air surveillance which Iceland executes with its four remote radar and communication sites.

Joint UK-Qatari Typhoon squadron stands up as defence relationship deepens
As part of the multi-billion-pound contract to supply Qatar with 24 Typhoon aircraft and 9 Hawk T2 aircraft, No.12 Squadron will integrate Qatari personnel, including pilots and ground-crew, from 2019. The personnel will be initially stationed at RAF Coningsby, and then in Qatar, undertaking a package of training and co-operation with their UK counterparts.

Qatar closes in on Typhoon acquisition
Qatar has signalled its intention to acquire 24 Eurofighter Typhoons, in a move which would further strengthen its future air combat capabilities. Details of the planned purchase emerged following a government-to-government meeting conducted in Doha on 17 September. "After a number of years of negotiations between our two countries, I am delighted to have been able to sign with Qatar's defence minister this statement of intent on the purchase of 24 Typhoon aircraft," says UK defence secretary Sir Michael Fallon. Doha had previously considered the Eurofighter product alongside Dassault's Rafale, before signing a 24-unit order for the French-built type in 2015.

Four Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4 fighter aircraft departed Romania on 28 August, ending the UK’s five-month leadership of NATO’s enhanced air policing mission in the country. Since April the Typhoons – from 3(F) Squadron, RAF Coningsby – had spent alternate weeks on high-readiness standby to defend NATO’s airspace over the Black Sea, augmenting the Romanian Air Force’s existing air defence capability.

Further Capability For Typhoon Unveiled

Minister Announces New Typhoon Squadron
One of the oldest squadrons in the Royal Air Force is to be re-equipped with the latest Typhoon jets, it has been announced. The move is part of a transformation of the RAF’s combat air capability which will see the battle proven Tornado GR.4 aircraft replaced by state-of-the-art Typhoon and F-35B Lightning II fighters. Number II (Army Co-operation) Squadron, based at RAF Marham in Norfolk, celebrated 100 years of service in 2012 and is currently training for its next tour of duty in Afghanistan flying Tornado jets early next year. After that, the unit will begin the process of swapping its Tornados for Eurofighter Typhoons and transfer to its new base at RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland.

RAF Units Return From Cyprus

Typhoons deploying to Cyprus
As part of ongoing contingency planning, 6 RAF Typhoon interceptor fast jets are deploying this morning to Akrotiri in Cyprus. This is a precautionary measure, specifically aimed at protecting UK interests and the defence of our Sovereign Base Areas at a time of heightened tension in the wider region. This is a movement of defensive assets operating in an air-to-air role only. They are not deploying to take part in any military action against Syria.
